Texas is leading the nation in ibogaine research and investment. With $50 million in state funding committed to clinical trials and former Governor Rick Perry as one of its most prominent advocates, Texas is where the ibogaine profession is being built — and Texas Ibogaine Institute is training the practitioners who will deliver this care.
In 2023, the Texas Legislature committed $50 million to fund ibogaine clinical trials through UTHealth Houston and UTMB Health — the largest government investment in psychedelic medicine research in US history.
Texas has one of the highest opioid mortality rates in the US. State leadership — including former Governor Rick Perry — has championed ibogaine as a critical tool in addressing the opioid epidemic.
No standardized ibogaine certification program existed in Texas before TII. Practitioners who get certified now will be the first credentialed ibogaine professionals in their region — a significant competitive advantage.
Texas Ibogaine Institute is Austin-based and built specifically to train Texas practitioners for the emerging ibogaine profession. Our curriculum reflects the Texas regulatory environment and research landscape.
In 2023, the Texas Legislature passed HB 1802, committing $50 million in state funding to ibogaine clinical trials. The funding was awarded to UTHealth Houston and UTMB Health, which are now conducting the largest government-funded ibogaine research program in US history. The trials are focused primarily on ibogaine's effectiveness for opioid use disorder and PTSD — two conditions that have devastated Texas communities and for which existing treatments have significant limitations.
Former Governor Rick Perry has been one of the most visible and vocal advocates for ibogaine research. Perry, who has spoken publicly about witnessing ibogaine's transformative effects on veterans, testified before the Texas Legislature and has appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience twice to discuss ibogaine's potential. His advocacy — combined with the bipartisan support for veteran mental health — was instrumental in securing the $50M appropriation.
Ibogaine remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, which means it cannot be legally administered as a treatment in Texas or anywhere else in the United States outside of approved clinical trials. The $50M Texas investment funds research under FDA-approved clinical trial protocols — not open clinical practice. Practitioners who want to work with ibogaine today must do so at licensed clinics in Mexico, Costa Rica, Portugal, or other jurisdictions where ibogaine is legal.
However, the Texas investment signals a clear trajectory. If the clinical trials produce the results that preliminary research suggests, ibogaine could be rescheduled or granted breakthrough therapy designation within the next 3–5 years. Practitioners who are certified and experienced now will be positioned to lead the field when that happens. Getting certified today is not just about the current job market — it is about owning your position in a profession that is about to scale dramatically.
Not currently as a standalone treatment — ibogaine is Schedule I federally. However, you can work as an integration coach (legal, no clinical license required), participate in the clinical trials as a trained staff member, or work at ibogaine clinics in Mexico, Costa Rica, or Portugal where ibogaine is legal.
UTHealth Houston and UTMB Health are conducting trials funded by the $50M state appropriation. Trials are focused on opioid use disorder and PTSD. Check the Texas HHS website and UTHealth news for the latest updates on enrollment and results.
Texas has one of the highest opioid mortality rates in the US and a large veteran population with high rates of PTSD. Former Governor Rick Perry's advocacy, combined with bipartisan support for veteran mental health, created the political conditions for the historic $50M investment.
